How it is calculated

The principle is that the new club pays what it would have cost to train the player itself. So the figure is the new club's annual training cost multiplied by the years of training, apportioned by month. To stop very young players attracting large sums, the calendar years of the 12th to 15th birthdays are always priced at Category IV, whatever category the training club sat in.

Compensable training runs to the calendar year of the 21st birthday. The right to claim runs to the end of the calendar year of the 23rd birthday. Those are two different cut-offs and mixing them up is one of the most common errors.

Assumptions built in
  • An age-year bucket runs 1 January to 31 December of the calendar year in which the player turns that age.
  • Part years are apportioned on whole months, derived from the registration dates and rounded to the nearest month. FIFA's own system apportions to the nearest day, so a part year can differ slightly.
  • Only CONMEBOL and UEFA have a Category I. UEFA figures are in EUR, all others in USD.
  • The Category IV rule for the 12 to 15 years is applied before the EU and EEA provisions, which are applied to the 16 to 21 years.
  • Training compensation arises on international transfers. Movement between clubs of the same association is governed by that association's own rules.
  • Where it is established that a player finished training before turning 21, the compensable period ends earlier. That judgement is not automated here.
  • Provisions for women's football have developed separately. Check the regulations in force for the transfer you are working on.
